Electrical equipment tenders are for suppliers of lighting, switchgear, cable, fire alarm equipment and other electrical products, bought by councils, NHS bodies, universities and other public buyers. Before you bid, check three things: the product safety and marking rules, how the buyer will score the tender, and whether the contract is a framework, a dynamic market or a single purchase. This page covers each, with a link to the government source. The notice and the tender pack set the exact requirements.

Supplying or installing?

This page is for suppliers: wholesalers, manufacturers and distributors of electrical products. If you fit and wire equipment, you want electrical installation tenders. In our data, supply sits in CPV division 31 (electrical equipment), and installation work is often classified as construction works (division 45), so the two get searched and alerted separately. The same notice sometimes asks for both, so read the lots.

What buyers usually ask electrical equipment suppliers for

Safety regulations and marking

The Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 set the duties for placing electrical equipment on the market. Under regulation 6, once a manufacturer has shown conformity through the assessment procedure, it must prepare a declaration of conformity and apply the UK marking before placing the equipment on the market. In Northern Ireland the equivalent is the EU declaration and CE marking.

Check the pack to see whether the buyer wants the declaration with your bid or at delivery.

UKCA or CE marking

Government guidance says the UK continues to recognise CE marking, alongside or in place of UKCA, for the Great Britain market under the Product Safety and Metrology (Amendment) Regulations 2024. It doesn’t apply to every product, so use the sector table to check yours.

Product data, warranties and spares

Public buyers may ask for data sheets, test evidence, warranty terms and how long you’ll stock spares. For lighting, switchgear and fire alarm equipment the pack may also ask for compatibility with the buyer’s existing system. Check what is requested and when, because test evidence asked for at bid stage can take time to gather.

Environmental and energy-efficiency specifications

A specification may set energy-efficiency or environmental requirements for the products, such as efficacy for lighting or standby power. Read the pack for the exact specification and test method before you price.

Other product regimes in the sector table

Safety is not the only regime. The government’s sector table also lists the Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulations 2016, where either the UKCA or CE mark is accepted in Great Britain, and the Ecodesign for Energy-Related Products Regulations 2010, where either mark is allowed if the product meets GB ecodesign requirements.

Which regimes apply depends on the product, so check the table for each product family you sell. Then check whether the pack asks for evidence against any of them with your bid.

How to win electrical equipment contracts

In the week to 10 Oct 2026 there were 15 live electrical equipment notices in our data (as of 10 Oct 2026). The sample is small, so we don’t quote a typical contract value.

Frameworks and dynamic markets

A framework is a contract that provides for future awards to its suppliers. Its term generally can’t exceed four years. Dynamic markets (formerly dynamic purchasing systems, or DPS) are the other route. A buyer must publish a dynamic market notice before it establishes one, again after it exists and when it is changed or closed. If supplies you sell are bought this way, setting up a watch on those notices gets you in early. See dynamic markets.

Lots by product family

Buyers must consider splitting a requirement into lots or give reasons. If lots follow product families, such as lighting, cable or fire alarm equipment, bid for the ones where your range is complete. Check in the pack whether a partial range is acceptable within a lot.

Know how the tender will be scored

A buyer may award to the most advantageous tender: the one that meets its requirements and best satisfies the award criteria. Find the criteria and their weightings in the pack before you write anything. If price carries most of the marks, your effort goes into a sharp, well-evidenced price. If quality or delivery carries marks, show your lead times, stock position and aftersales support in specific terms.

Supplies thresholds from 1 January 2026

PPN 023 sets the threshold at £135,018 for central government authorities and £207,720 for other contracting authorities from 1 January 2026. Under that, the below-threshold rules apply. If a buyer advertises a contract worth £12,000 or more (central government, including NHS trusts) or £30,000 or more (others), including VAT, it must first publish a below-threshold tender notice. Buyers can also invite quotes from chosen suppliers without advertising. Schools and transferred Northern Ireland authorities are outside this regime.

For a small supplier, those smaller orders can be a way in. Our CPV code finder shows which codes to alert on. Our tender eligibility checker is coming soon. Until then, tell us your trade and postcode to join the free weekly list of live tenders, starting soon.

If you supply fire alarm equipment, see fire safety tenders. If you supply panels, inverters or mounting systems, see solar PV tenders.

Questions

What's the difference between electrical equipment tenders and electrical installation tenders?

Equipment tenders are for supplying products such as lighting, switchgear, cable or fire alarm equipment. Installation tenders are for fitting and wiring them, and are covered on our electrical installation page. A notice can be both, so look at the lots and the description to see whether you are being asked to supply, install or do both.

Do electrical products need UKCA marking for public contracts?

Not always. The government says CE marking continues to be recognised alongside or in place of UKCA for the Great Britain market for the product regulations covered by the Product Safety and Metrology (Amendment) Regulations 2024. Which marking applies depends on the product, so check the government's sector table and the tender pack.

How do I join a dynamic market for electrical supplies?

A dynamic market is the Procurement Act 2023 successor to the dynamic purchasing system. The buyer must publish a dynamic market notice before it establishes one, so watch for those notices. How to apply is set out in the buyer's own documents, so read the notice and follow its instructions.

Can I bid for one product lot?

Often, if the buyer has split the requirement. Buyers must consider whether to award in lots and give their reasons if they don't. If the notice has lots by product family, such as lighting or cable, you can bid for the lots you can supply and ignore the rest.
